Beschreibung

Equine colic remains a leading cause of morbidity, one of the most frequent and challenging conditions in equine medicine with significant implications for both welfare and costs. While acute treatment and management is essential, long-term strategies are aimingat prevention, which are equally critical.

In recent years nutraceuticals are becoming an essential component in both the prevention and management of gastrointestinal disorders. Nutraceuticals are valuable tools that offer targeted support for intestinal health, mucosal protection and neuromuscularfunction while contributing to improved gastrointestinal integrity and modulating inflammation.

In our daily work as veterinarians focused on equine internal medicine, we routinely incorporate a range of high-quality supplements into individualized treatment plans.

Some examples of products that will be discussed are: Navalis Coloncare; Navalis Gastrocare; Navalis Musclecare Amino Horse.

This presentation will focus on the integration of nutraceuticals, such as prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics; gastroprotective agents and antioxidants, into individualized prevention and treatment protocols for colic-prone horses. Their mechanism of actionand clinical indications will be highlighted.

Using case-based examples, we will explore how nutraceuticals can enhance outcome when being used alongside conventional diagnostics and therapies. More specifically in the context of equine gastric ulcer syndrome, dysbiosis-related colic, and post-surgicalrecovery.

Practical guidance will be provided on incorporating dietary interventions and microbiome support as part of a holistic colic prevention plan.

The aim of the use of nutraceuticals is to reduce colic incidence, support recovery and promoting long-term gastrointestinal health.

Attendees will be informed about incorporating nutraceuticals into routine equine care, with special focus on risk reduction in recurrent colic cases and improved long-term management.
